Disability Equality Training (DET) Facilitators’ Training (FT) 2024 Completed

On the 2 August 2024, the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and DET Forum completed the online Disability Equality Training (DET) Facilitators’ Training (FT). Fourteen (14) participants completed the course with the skills and knowledge necessary to conduct DET in their home nations.
DET is a participatory group work approach to changing attitudes and practices toward a more inclusive society for individuals with disabilities. It is based on the Social Model of Disability, which recognizes that individuals are disabled not by their impairments but by societal barriers and attitudes.

Twenty-three participants from seventeen Asia-Pacific nations and beyond commenced this course. Through OnDemand learning and online live schooling (video conference), they engaged in vibrant discussions with one another and the facilitators. In a group discussion, they discussed their perspectives on DET and the Social Model of Disability. In the Zoom breakout room, they also learned about “What is DET,” the Social Model of disability, Discovery learning, and facilitation skills.

Dr. Kenji Kuno, an APCD advisor on disability and development and a senior advisor for JICA, conducted the session with the assistance of DET tutors with disabilities, namely, Mr. Fariz A. Rani(Malaysia), Ms. Siew Chin Sia (Malaysia), Ms. Eunice Factor (Philippines), Ms. Nayfeh Kurdi (Jordan), Mr. Sawang Srisom (Thailand), Ms. Natagamon Roongtim (Thailand), and Mr. Watcharapol Chuengcharoen (Thailand). The instructors gave participants feedback and direction regarding their practice facilitation and analysis.

The DET FT 2024 is a joint effort between APCD, JICA, and the DET Forum to advance disability equality and inclusion in the region. They commit to serving as a regional resource center to increase the capacity of DET facilitators to conduct effectively and empower them to be agents of change.
