APCD holds Disability Equality Training for TCIL

On 28 March 2023, the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) organized a “Disability Equality Training (DET)” session for the Thailand Council for Independent Living (TCIL) at the APCD Training Center in Bangkok, Thailand. In perspective of social model, the session aimed to enhance the understanding, awareness and take actions of disability, impairments, and barriers to be key actors into action towards inclusive society among TCIL members and staff. The session began with welcome remarks by Mr. Somchai Rungsilp, Manager of Community Development Department at APCD. He explained the Independent Living Philosophy and the collaboration between APCD and TCIL in promoting the rights and empowerment of persons with disabilities in Thailand.

Mr. Udomchok Choorat, the chair of TCIL, delivered the opening remarks and encouraged all local Independent Living centers in Thailand to join the session and learn from each other. He also expressed his appreciation to APCD for hosting the session and supporting TCIL’s activities. The participants then engaged in an interactive session that included group discussions, presentations and feedback. They learned about the concepts of impairments, barriers, disability diversity, equity, and inclusion, and how to apply them in their work and daily lives. They also discussed the differences between impairments and disabilities, and how to create an inclusive society that respects and values persons with disabilities. The session ended with a feedback session with participants, resource persons and APCD staff. The participants expressed their satisfaction and gratitude for the session and hoped to have more opportunities to learn from APCD in the future.

APCD Facilitates Disability Equality Training (DET) to Empower Young Thai Leaders with Disabilities and Their Personal Assistants (PAs) from TIL

The Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) has taken a bold step in promoting social inclusion and empowerment for persons with disabilities through Disability Equality Training (DET). The APCD recently facilitated the DET program for young Thai leaders with disabilities and their PAs from the Thailand Council for Independent Living (TIL). The program aims to create a more inclusive society in view of social model and encourage persons with disabilities to become agents of change in their communities.

DET program was held on May 3, 2023, and May 18, 2023. It was attended by approximately thirty participants per day, including individuals with physical disabilities and their PAs. The two interactive sessions were filled with lively discussions and engaging activities, including social models’ exercises to improve the quality of accessibility for persons with disabilities. The APCD facilitators also shared their individual experiences and insights on discrimination and stigma faced by persons with disabilities.

During the sessions, the participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the current situations faced by persons with disabilities in Thailand. The program also provided guidelines for the inclusion of disability equality as an essential component of the training program, enabling the participants to take their commitment to the next level and become agents of change in their communities.

As a witness to the success of the program, the participants left the DET sessions feeling empowered and motivated to create positive change for persons with disabilities. The group photos of participants and APCD facilitators on DET showed the fellowship and enthusiasm of the group. The DET session organized by APCD not only enhanced the empowerment and advocacy of persons with disabilities but also created a more inclusive society for all.

APCD Promotes Disability Equality Training (DET) to empower Young Thai leaders with disabilities.

The Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) recently led a Disability Equality Training (DET) session, part of a larger initiative to empower young Thai leaders with disabilities. This event, held on 17 July 2024, in Nonthaburi Province, was organized by the Thailand Council for Independent Living (TCIL) and Rajasuda College, Mahidol University. The training aimed to promote the social model of disability and encourage participants to become proactive contributors to their communities. Mr. Watcharapol Chuengcharoen, Chief of Networking & Collaboration and Ms. Siriporn Praserdchat, Logistics Officer facilitated twenty young individuals with physical disabilities engaged in the program, gaining valuable insights into the social model of disability and learning how to advocate for themselves and others. The session highlighted the importance of disability equity in training and identify the physical, social, and attitudinal environments in which disabled persons live can either enable or disable their participation in society., inspiring attendees to pursue independent living and become agents of change.
